When his HP is critical, his defense, strength, and hit-combo ratio raises dramatically. I tried killing him straight-up for this part, but it's much easier to use a quickening. When his HP gets critical, use a hastega mote (if you have one) to whittle his HP down or if you have enough Mist Charges, use a quickening.
